2-Chloromethcathinone, commonly referred to as 2-CMC, is a synthetic compound that falls within the cathinone class of psychoactive substances. Its chemical structure closely resembles that of other methcathinone derivatives, including 2-MMC, 3-MMC, 4-MMC, 3-CMC and 4-CMC. Unlike cathinone, which is naturally occurring in the khat plant (Catha edulis), 2-CMC is entirely synthetic and does not exist in nature.

First identified in 2016, 2-CMC quickly attracted attention due to its stimulating properties, which are often likened to those of mephedrone, and to a lesser degree, MDMA and cocaine. This substance has been marketed online as a designer drug, particularly in various European nations such as Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

Recreational Use

Users report that the effects of 2-CMC are similar to those of 2-MMC and 3-MMC, although many note a reduction in potency and a shorter duration of action. The effects typically include stimulation, euphoria, heightened confidence, increased libido, and enhanced sociability. 2-CMC can be consumed orally or through nasal insufflation. The acute effects of 2-CMC generally last between 1 to 4 hours, depending on the method of administration. Aftereffects, such as difficulty sleeping, may persist for an additional 3 to 12 hours.
